Open a Private or Incognito Browsing Session
Introduction This article is intended for anyone who needs to open a private or incognito browsing session in their main browser. Applicability This article is intended for all U of A account users that use one of the 4 standard browsers covered in this article: Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox. Details Using a private or incognito will open a browser session that doesn't use any previously stored account, browsing, or add-on data, and data about your browsing session is not saved. Private browsing is useful for troubleshooting issues with a website or service as private browsing sessions do not use any data or accounts saved in your browser. Windows 10 and 11 version 22H2 Update
Introduction This article provides additional information on the update to Windows 10 and 11 version 22H2. Applicability The target audience of this article are Windows users in the Central Domain, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Libraries, and Registrar's Office domain. Detail In order to ensure the safety and security of the computing experience at the U of A, IST will be upgrading your Windows computer to version 22H2 of Windows 11 or Windows 10. These upgrades will take place after hours, starting at 6PM on August 7, 2023 and will retry daily at 6PM until successfully installed. This upgrade only applies to computers meeting the following criteria: Windows computers that are joined to the Central, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Libraries, and Registrar's Office domain. How to check if your computer is joined to one of the domains listed above: Open Command Prompt by pressing Windows Key + R. Type cmd in the Run window that appears and press Enter. Type systeminfo | findstr /B "Domain" in the Command Prompt window, and press Enter. If you are not joined to a domain, you should see 'Domain: WORKGROUP'. If you see any of the following you are joined to one of the domains listed above: sts.ad.ualberta.ca med.ualberta.ca library.ualberta.ca registrar.ualberta.ca Computers running a Windows 10 or 11 operating system older than version 22H2. How to tell which version you are running: Open Command Prompt by pressing Windows Key + R. Type winver in the Run window that appears and press Enter. Check your version in the About Windows window that appears. Computers that are plugged into a wired network connection. It will not work over UWS or VPN. To facilitate this upgrade, there are just a few simple steps you will need to take: The upgrade will require a reboot so please save and close all of your work at the end of the day until the upgrade is installed. Please leave your computer turned on at the end of the day. You may log out or lock your computer. Although this upgrade will not affect or delete data or installed software we always recommend backing up your computer. Please see this article for backup options. Please note that IST already backs up your network shared drives and your home drive (usually called P drive). Data saved elsewhere, such as on your Desktop or browser bookmarks may not be backed up. Will this upgrade delete my data? A. This is only an upgrade to your current operating system and therefore will not affect or delete your saved data or installed software. Q. Will this upgrade be installed on my work computer at home? A. Computers which are not located on North Campus, ESQ, or Augustana and/or not joined to one of the domains listed above should be upgraded to version 22H2 of Windows 10 or 11 but must be done manually. Please contact us at 780-492-9400 if you require assistance. Q. Doesn't IST already back up my computer? A. IST backs up your departmental shared drives and your home drive (usually called P drive). Data saved elsewhere, such as on your Desktop or browser bookmarks may not be backed up. Q. How long will this upgrade take to install? A. The upgrade will take at least one hour. Q. How will I know when the upgrade is complete? A. The upgrade is complete when your computer is running version 22H2 of Windows 10 or 11. How to tell which version you are running: Open Command Prompt by pressing Windows Key + R. Type winver in the Run window that appears and press Enter. Check your version in the About Windows window that appears. Q. Does my University owned computer on campus have to be turned on for this to work? A. Yes. Any computer that you wish to receive and install upgrades must be turned on for this to work. Q. Should the computers be updated before this upgrade takes place? A. It is not necessary to update your computer before performing this upgrade. However it is good practice to make sure your computer is regularly updated. Find Your Computer Name
Introduction This article will help you find the name of your computer. Applicability The target audience is any University of Alberta employee. Procedure Your computer name identifies your device. IST might ask for your computer name to help with troubleshooting. Follow the steps for your computer's operating system to find your computer name. Windows 11 Select Start > Settings > System. Your computer name appears at the top of the System window. Windows 10 Select Start > Settings > System > About. Your computer name appears under Device specifications. macOS Ventura or later On the Apple menu , select System Settings > General > About. Your computer name appears at the top of the About window. macOS Monterey or earlier On the Apple menu , select System Preferences > Sharing. Your computer name appears at the top of the Sharing window.
