Open a Private or Incognito Browsing Session
Introduction This article is intended for anyone who needs to open a private or incognito browsing session in their main browser. Applicability This article is intended for all U of A account users that use one of the 4 standard browsers covered in this article: Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox. Details Using a private or incognito will open a browser session that doesn't use any previously stored account, browsing, or add-on data, and data about your browsing session is not saved. Private browsing is useful for troubleshooting issues with a website or service as private browsing sessions do not use any data or accounts saved in your browser. Find Your Computer Name
Introduction This article will help you find the name of your computer. Applicability The target audience is any University of Alberta employee. Procedure Your computer name identifies your device. IST might ask for your computer name to help with troubleshooting. Follow the steps for your computer's operating system to find your computer name. Windows 11 Select Start > Settings > System. Your computer name appears at the top of the System window. Windows 10 Select Start > Settings > System > About. Your computer name appears under Device specifications. macOS Ventura or later On the Apple menu , select System Settings > General > About. Your computer name appears at the top of the About window. macOS Monterey or earlier On the Apple menu , select System Preferences > Sharing. Your computer name appears at the top of the Sharing window.

Connecting to ALES Network Drives
Introduction This article will go over how ALES staff members can connect to their department network drives. Applicability This article is intended for ALES staff and faculty members requiring network access while not on campus or when using a wifi connection. Before you Begin IMPORTANT To connect to your network drives off campus you will need to have access to the @ales VPN context. If you have that access please continue with the steps below. If you do not have access, please have your supervisor submit a request via the service catalogue item: VPN Users (Add, Remove) Procedure This process requires the Cisco Anyconnect VPN. If you don’t already have it from IST, download the app at vpn.ualberta.ca. Open Cisco VPN and direct it to vpn.ualberta.ca Login to the VPN client as ccid@ales with your ccid password You will then have a confirmation notification The next steps will be different whether you are on a Windows or a Mac. Proceed to the page that is relevant to you. Windows Instructions 1. In Windows Explorer go to the network address \\cloudserver.ales.ualberta.ca\ You will be then prompted for a username and password. Use the format afhe\ccid and your ALES Password if it’s different from your CCID password. 2. Then you will see all the Shares Available but will only have access to the ones you have been given access to via ticket requests in the past. 3. To connect to your P Drive on ALES only, go directly to the location by using the following \\cloudserver.ales.ualberta.ca\ccid$ 4. You can choose to map all of this as well with the Map Network drive feature from the My Computer menu Remember these drives are only active with the VPN running and connected to the @ales context shown above. macOS Instructions 1. In Finder go to Connect to Server 2. Input the paths as shown for the main cloudserver shares. In this example, if you wish to map your P drive you would type in smb://cloudserver.ales.ualberta.ca/ccid$ 3. For the Shares you have permissions for you can navigate to the path below and go into your dept or group. smb://cloudserver.ales.ualberta.ca/ After clicking Connect, an Authentication window will pop up 4. Use the afhe\ccid and your ALES password 5. Choose the known P Drive shares you have access to from the list. Drives you have access to will open in the Finder. An error message will pop up if you select Drives you do not have permission to access. Remember, these drives are only active with the VPN running and connected to the @ales context shown above.
