How to Find a Master's Supervisor - Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (Graduate)
When considering an application to all our graduate programs (thesis and course-based), it is the responsibility of the applicant to connect with a faculty member who could appropriately supervise the research project that you intend to develop. The role of the graduate supervisor is to provide guidance and direction in the selection of courses, the thesis or research topic and research methods, and thus must have the expertise required to support your intended research project. Potential supervisors will also be assessing your potential alignment with their expertise and their program of research. Some faculty members may be unable to accept new students at this time depending on the number of graduate students that they are currently supervising. Consider the following steps toward securing a potential supervisor: Develop an executive summary of your personal academic. This should include highlights of your educational background, publications and academic achievements, and research plans. The Research section of our web site can help you determine which professor's research may match your own areas of interest. Identify a list of those specific faculty members whose expertise is aligned with your intended research project. Contact selected faculty members by email and append your executive summary of your academic profile. Invite the faculty member to connect with you by email, phone, or teleconference to have a conversation about your application. Be prepared to explore with a potential supervisor how your possible research question could align with their research program and expertise. If you are unsuccessful in your search, it may be that our faculty members are not a good match with your area of research, or they do not have the capacity. In that case, you may have to change your topic to one that more closely aligns with a potential supervisor, resulting in a good fit. Your other option would be to consider broadening your search to another great Canadian university. Although we would like for you to study at the University of Alberta, we recognize that is not always possible as a student's success in a graduate program depends on finding a supervisor with similar research interests.

Is a Supervisor Required Prior to Applying - Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (Graduate)
All applicants must find a potential supervisor who has expressed interest in taking them on as a student prior to applying to our graduate programs. This applies to all our graduate programs, even the course-based programs (Master of Arts and Master of Coaching). The Research section of our website can help you determine which professor's research may match your own areas of interest. In addition, acceptance into the Master of Coaching is contingent upon also having a mentor coach, along with a supervisor, prior to applying. It is highly recommended that applicants identify a potential mentor coach prior to applying. To identify a mentor coach, applicants can contact a coach from the list of Bears and Pandas coaches.

How to Apply for Admission to a Graduate Program - Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (Graduate)
Prior to applying, please familiarize yourself with our application deadlines. For information on how to apply, please visit the Graduate Programs/Admissions section of our website, and start by reviewing the following sections: Admission Requirements and How to Apply - Steps 1 - 7. Please ensure you pay special attention to Step #2 as this is a requirement of applying. You must secure a potential supervisor who will be willing to take you on as a student before applying. The Research section of our web site can help you determine which professor's research may match your own areas of interest. You must apply, pay the application fee, and upload all required application documents in order for you to be considered for admission to one of our programs. As part of the application process you will be required to write a letter of intent; here you can indicate your research interests, past accomplishments and experiences, career goals, and what would make you a good candidate for the program (How to Apply - Step 4). When we make admission decisions it is important that we be able to match you and your research interests to a supervisor with similar research interests. Our graduate programs are individualized according to your interests and career goals. Students, with their supervisor's guidance, select courses to tailor the program to meet their specific objectives. A proposed supervisor must be identified in your application for admission. Review How to Apply - Step 2 on how to contact professors prior to submitting an application for admission. Note that this communication is not intended to make any commitments, but to provide the professors with information about your interests. You may also wish to visit the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies as it contains helpful information for prospective international and domestic students about programs, costs, admission deadlines, study permits, cost of living and additional information for graduate students
