Modified on: Mon, 11 Dec 2023 3:08 PM

Introduction

This article will explain how to connect to the University Wireless Service (UWS) with an Android 7.1 Nougat and 8.0 Oreo based mobile device while on-campus at the University of Alberta.

Applicability

The steps in the procedure below apply to anyone with a valid University of Alberta Campus Computing ID (CCID) wishing to connect to UWS from an Android 7.1 Nougat and 8.0 Oreo based mobile device. Your operating system may differ. Please consult your device manufacturers website or IST for more information.

Procedure

  1. Access the Settings screen on your device by swiping down from the top of your screen and tapping the settings icon.

  2. Make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on, and tap Wi-Fi to continue setup.

  3. In the list of Wi-Fi networks, select UWS.

  4. In the next configuration screen, select the settings as below.

    EAP Method : PEAP
    Phase 2 Authentication:  MSCHAPV2
CA Certificates : Use system certificates
Minimum TLS Version : TLS v1.2
Online Certificate Status: Request certificate status
    Domain : ualberta.ca
Identity : yourCCID (must be all lower case)
    Anonymous identity : Leave Blank
    Password : your Password

    Then tap Connect.
You may have to scroll down in the window on your device, or hide the keyboard to see the Identity and Password fields.

    On Newer Android Phones:

  5. UWS will then obtain an IP address and connect.

When your phone does not allow you to select a valid certificate for CA Certificate setting, follow the instructions below.
(For most Samsung devices)

If you are not able to select "Use System Certificate" as your security certificate, the system gives you a warning that your network may not be private.

Here is how to make your WiFi network secure.

  1. Make sure you have internet connections on your phone.

  2. Open a browser and go to https://sites.ualberta.ca/~nos/certs/GlobalSign_Organization_Validation_CA-SHA256-G2.pem
This intermediate certs signs the UWS cert wirelessauth.ualberta.ca obtained in the next step. The intermediate cert is signed by GlobalSign's root cert which will already be on your device.
  3. Then go to https://sites.ualberta.ca/~nos/certs/wirelessauth.ualberta.ca-cert.pem (case sensitive)
This will automatically download the security certificate from our server. This is equivalent to GlobalSign security certificate.

  4. Phones with security code will ask you to type in your passcode/password.

  5. Download the certificate and name it as either "GlobalSignCert" or "UWS Certificate".

  6. Change Credential use for "Wi-Fi" and save it.

  7. Phones without any security code will ask you to set up a security code in order to do this.
  8. Go to Wi-Fi settings and select UWS. You should be able to select the downloaded certificate as your CA Certificate option now.

Note: If you forget/disconnect WiFi from UWS after this, this CA Certificate option will disappear. You would have to go into

"Settings" > "Lock screen and security" > "Other security settings" > "Install from device storage"

and install the downloaded certificate again. Meanwhile, you can also follow the same steps and re-download, install the security certificate as well.

Required Software versions (or better) to connect to UWS:

A minimum of Android version 5 (Lollipop) will be required to connect to the UWS wireless network.

If your device does not meet this minimum requirement please use the Guest@UofA wireless network.
