How to Connect to UWS with ChromeOS

Modified on: Tue, 24 Oct 2023 9:26 AM

Introduction

This article will explain how to connect to the University Wireless Service (UWS) on Chromebooks running ChromeOS while on-campus at the University of Alberta.

Applicability

The steps in the procedure below apply to anyone with a valid University of Alberta Campus Computing ID (CCID) wishing to connect to UWS from a Chromebook running ChromeOS version 114.X and above.

Procedure

1. Ensure your ChromeOS device is up to date with the latest version of ChromeOS. See Google’s Update your Chromebook’s operating system help article if you aren’t sure how to do that.

PLEASE NOTE: Older versions of ChromeOS may not be compatible with UWS

2. Open the Quick Settings Panel at the bottom right of your screen and click on the network icon.

3. Select UWS from the list of available wireless networks.

Troubleshooting Tip:
If you don’t see UWS listed as an available network, you may need to restart your device or move to a different location that is covered by the UWS network.

4. Once you’ve selected UWS, a Join Wi-Fi Network window should appear. In this window, complete the fields with the settings listed below.

PLEASE NOTE:
If a field is not listed below, it should be left blank or with the default setting.

EAP Method: Select PEAP from the dropdown menu

EAP Phase 2 authentication: Select MSCHAPv2 from the dropdown menu

Server CA Certificate: Select Default from the dropdown menu

Domain Suffix Match: Type ualberta.ca in the field

Identity: Type in your Campus Computing ID (CCID). Only enter your 8 character (or less) CCID. Do not include the @ualberta.ca suffix

Password: Type in your CCID password

Troubleshooting Tip:
If you aren’t sure what your CCID password is, you can test it here.

5. After all settings have been entered correctly, click Connect. Once your device is connected to UWS you will see UWS listed in the network icon and the icon should now be a solid color.

Troubleshooting Tip:
Hovering your cursor over the network icon will give you more information on your network connection.

6. If you encounter any errors or if UWS doesn’t work once connected, proceed to the Troubleshooting UWS Connection Issues on Chromebooks section below.

If the above steps failed, you can try the following steps for the most commonly encountered issues. If one step fails, move on the next one until your issue is resolved or you have completed the troubleshooting. Be sure to follow each step in order for best results.

Resolution Steps

I got a message saying my username or password was incorrect.

  1. Follow the How to Connect steps again ensuring you are entering your CCID and password carefully to make sure there were no typos or extra spaces. Passwords are case sensitive.
  2. Test your CCID password at myccid.ualberta.ca/check. If you don’t see a green checkmark besides “UWS” in the results, reset your CCID password. (If you don’t have self service password reset enabled, you will need to call the IT Service Desk to have your password reset).
  3. Forget the UWS Wi-Fi network on your device, restart your device, then try re-adding the UWS network.
  4. If you continue to have issues, your device may not be compatible with UWS. Try using Guest@UofA wireless network instead.

I’m connected to UWS but it says I have no internet.

  1. If you are using a private DNS or VPN service with your device, try disabling that service on your device and reconnecting the UWS network.
  2. Forget the UWS Wi-Fi network on your device, restart your device, then try re-adding the UWS network.
