User Guide for Transferring Data using Globus
Introduction
This article provides instructions for several tasks required for accessing the Globus web application, using University of Alberta Single Sign-On credentials and transferring data.
Applicability
This article is intended for researchers using the Globus web application to transfer research data to and from their computer and U of A storage systems.

1.0 Accessing the Globus web application with U of A Credentials
1. Go to the Globus portal https://app.globus.org
2. Log in by choosing ‘University of Alberta’ as the organization and select ‘Continue’.

3. In the UAlberta Login, enter your CCID and Password, then select ‘Login’.
4. Open the Duo app on your phone. For the ‘Are you logging into the UofA SAML Site’ request, select ‘Approve’.
5. You may be asked ‘Is this your device’, if yes then select ‘Yes, this is my device’.
6. Agree to CILogon terms for authentication by selecting ‘Yes, continue’.
7. After these steps the Globus web portal should look like below. To switch between the single panel and two panels view select the second button on the top right of the page.

2.0 Installing Globus Connect Personal on your computer
1. Download Globus Personal Connect (GCP) from https://www.globus.org/globus-connect-personal
2. Follow the Globus Installation instructions.
Important:
a. Ensure installation occurs in a location that you have read and write access to. E.g. in C:\Users\username.
b. When you enter the details for your GCP Collection, you may choose to select the ‘High Assurance’ check box if applicable to the data on your computer. Before selecting this, refer to Globus Documentation about High Assurance.
3. Follow the Globus Configuration instructions.
a. By default Globus will give write access to your home directory. It is recommended to change this to a specific folder you will give Globus access to, such as shown here:

b. To ensure that your Home Folder for GCP is a location that you have read and write permission to, select the ‘General’ tab. Then enter a Home Folder location such as C:\Users\YourUserName\

4. View the GCP collection you created in the Globus web app in the ‘File Manager’ by selecting a Collection box and then the ‘Your Collections’ tab.
5. Select the Collection Name you created for your GCP collection. To view the files and folders in your GCP collection, navigate to the ‘Home Folder’ you gave Globus access to.
3.0 To start a Globus data transfer

Briefly:
1. In the Globus web application, select the ‘File Manager’ found on the left side bar.
2. Select the 2-panel option, by clicking on the second button on the top right of the page.
3. Select the Collection box, and search for the collection by typing a portion of the collection name.
4. Click on the desired Collection name.
5. Navigate to the desired folder and double click on the folder.
6. In the second panel in File Manager, select the Collection box, and search for the other collection of interest.
7. Navigate to the second desired folder.
8. Select the file or folder to transfer, check the ‘Transfer & Timer Options’ are correct for your transfer. To submit the transfer task, select ‘Start’ on the panel of the originating collection..
9. You may view the progress of the transfer by selecting the ‘Transfer submitted, View Details’ popup or select the ‘Activity’ tab on the left side bar and select the task.
4.0 Accessing the RDSS Globus Collection
To access data in the U of A Research Data Storage Service:
1. In the Globus ‘File Manager’, click in the ‘Collection’ search box at the top of the window. In ‘File Manager - Collection’ search for and select the ‘UAlberta IST Research Data Storage Service’ collection.
2. If asked to authenticate with the University of Alberta, select your ccid@ualberta.ca identity and authenticate with the U of A Single Sign-On credentials.

3. Navigate to your RDSS share folder and double click on the folder. This can be done by clicking in the ‘Path’ box and then entering your RDSS folder name in full.
4. To navigate to SDRE shares, in the ‘Path’ box first type ‘sdre’ and then hit enter. Second, enter the name of your Project Account and hit enter. (for example p000001).
5. Transfer data as described in section 3.0.
5.0 Accessing the U of A Google Drive Globus Collection
For accessing the U of A Google Drive via the Globus web application:
1. In the Globus ‘File Manager’, click in the ‘Collection’ search box at the top of the window. In ‘File Manager - Collection’ search for and select the ‘UAlberta IST Google Drive’ collection.

2. Select ‘Continue’.
3. You should then see your Google Account identified as your ccid@ualberta.ca email address. Select ‘Continue’.
4. A Google prompt will appear. Select ‘Continue’

5. Provide permission for ‘Google Drive for Globus’ to access your U of A Google Account. Select ‘Allow’.

6. Open the Collection in File Manage. You should see your ‘My Drive’, ‘Shared With Me’ and ‘Team Drives’ and be able to access files within these.

When using Globus with Google Drive, users are subject to Google’s data transfer limits. Google Drive limits users to upload or copy up to 750 GB every 24 hours. Individual files larger than 5 TB cannot be uploaded to Google Drive. For more information review: How your Google storage works and Shared drive limits in Google Drive.
Transferring Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and other Google-product files out of Google Drive will save a file that will only contain the pointer data. When the destination is an endpoint system or device, double-clicking the file will launch the default web browser and open the Google product.
