University of Alberta Statutory Holidays and Closures
The University of Alberta recognizes a combination of statutory holidays and university-wide closures throughout the year. These dates can impact employee schedules, pay, and time-off eligibility depending on employment terms and applicable agreements.
Employees eligibility for holiday pay is outlined in the Eligibility for General Holiday Pay by Employee Type table.
Statutory Holidays
Alberta Employment Standards recognizes the nine statutory holidays:
New Year’s Day (January 1)
Alberta Family Day (third Monday in February)
Good Friday (Friday before Easter)
Victoria Day (Monday preceding May 25)
Canada Day (July 1)
Labour Day (first Monday in September)
Thanksgiving Day (second Monday in October)
Remembrance Day (November 11)
Christmas Day (December 25)
Where a paid holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the paid holiday will be observed on the following Monday.
In addition to these, the University of Alberta also recognizes:
Winter Closure
Winter Closure is the four working days between Christmas and New Year’s Day when the University is considered closed. This closure does not include December 25 or January 1 (or their designated in-lieu days when they fall on a rest day). These dates are statutory paid holidays and are managed separately.
For more information on eligibility and effect on pay during the Winter Closure, please refer to the documentation provided under the Upcoming Paid Holidays table.
