Request that a device in the IST Data Centre be decommissioned
Introduction
This article describes the process of decommissioning a device from IST data centres:
- General Services Building
- Enterprise Square
- Edmonton Clinic Health Academy (ECHA)
This includes servers, networking devices, disk arrays, and any other physical computing equipment that is no longer required.
Applicability
This article is applicable to any device or service owner that has equipment located in IST data centres. (This includes non-IST groups or organizations that have equipment co-located in IST data centres.)
Procedure
When a device is to be decommissioned, a service request should be directed to the IST DNDCS - Data Center team by opening a FreshService Hardware Decommission request.
The requestor is responsible for ensuring that the services are shut down or have been transitioned to another device. When a decommission request is received, it is understood that the device has been powered off and is no longer required.
All cables must be left connected.
Devices must only be removed and disconnected by the IST DNDCS - Data Center team, to ensure network connections are properly disabled and inventory is kept up-to-date.
If the device is to be repurposed in another location, IST can deliver the devices back to the owner. IST can also handle the surplus/e-Waste process through Supply Management Services (SMS) for unwanted devices, in accordance with University policy.
A Data Center Specialist will receive the request and begin the decommissioning process.
